The Author’s Bookshelf

As an author, you really want to spend your time writing. I totally get that. I do. But, if you don’t do a little marketing too then no one will know about that fabulous book.

I’m here to help you with various levels of assistance. I’ve got a lot of free information via my blogs, videos and podcasts. We have the Authors’ Allies RoundTable done-with-you marketing membership to help walk you through creating your own marketing suite amongst a community of amazing fellow authors. And, I also offer done-for-you one on one services.

If doing it all yourself is more your speed (or your budget) there are so many people out there to learn from. I take classes nearly every day to try and stay on top of the author marketing world for you. Here are a few books out there that you may find helpful. Be sure to also follow them on social media as they typically have some challenges and videos that you can access at no charge.

Here’s what’s on my author marketing bookshelf:

  • Marketing Matters by Wendy H Jones. Wendy leads one of the best and largest women’s writing groups on Facebook and her book is a great overview of setting up a marketing program.

  • The Author’s Field Guide to Marketing by Morgan Gist Macdonald, etc. This is available in KU and also free in audible with memberships.

  • Successful Self Publishing: How to Self Publish and Market Your Book 4th edition Joanna Penn- long known as a successful full-time author entrepreneur, Ms. Penn has recently redone this book, and I’m awaiting the new edition. She has a wonderful podcast that goes with the books as well. Truly, she’s an author you need to follow if you want to have a writing career.

  • The Author’s Guide to Libraries. Cari Dubiel is a librarian and an author, and her book walks you through the process of how libraries choose their books. She was also kind enough to be a guest on our podcast so be sure to watch this episode.

  • The Author Advertising Blueprint by Matthew J. Holmes. I’ve taken some of his classes, and I really like the strategic way he does Facebook ads.

  • Self-Publishing with Amazon Ads by Bryan Cohen. I’m hoping he redoes this one soon, as it’s from 2022, but Bryan has long been known as a good Amazon ads resource. I enjoy his ad challenges when they come around.

  • The Ultimate Guide to Book Marketing by Nicholas Erik. I follow him and get his email,s and he breaks it down well.

  • Help! My Facebook Ads Suck by Malorie and Jill Cooper (aka The Writing Wives)- I’ve taken a few of their classes and they do a nice job of walking you through the ads and they really break it down for you.

If you’re a note taker like I am, all of the above are worth getting in print version so you can highlight, tab, and look back as you do the ad,s but if budget is a factor, they are all available on ebook and some in audiobook. I found the audiobooks difficult to follow, though as there are graphics and photos included in the print/ebook copies.

Am I missing any must-haves that need to be added to this list? I’d love to know. Please email me or drop them in the comments.

I often recommend products and services that I use or that have been recommended to me by people we trust. I only suggest items that I have personally used and love. In many cases an affiliate link accompanies these recommendations, (including Amazon -except for my products which are mine and not affiliate links) which provides me with a referral commission should you click through and make a purchase. This is always at no additional cost to you.
